The Ol' Granary
One of my "life" projects these days, praying for the "time-to-live" to get it established as an on-the-land facility (currently it's only a website), is the National Bread Museum (nationalbreadmuseum.org) for my country, the United States of America. I know there are currently at least 90 "bread culture" affiliated "bread museums" throughout the world (the first was in 1955 in Ulm, Germany).
These museums (& their attached programs) exist for the historical preservation and educational benefit of documenting the past way of life regarding the theme of "ag/grain-milling-flour-bread/baking."
Now since this excursion was because of a son living in Brazil to teach at an American International School a few years, he made all the plans for where to eat and what to order, knowing what we'd like to try. Therefore, on one of the last evenings, it was a delight that in the heart of the historic Recife downtown, which is on an island, we ate at an open-air restaurant on the roof of an old granary which is being renovated to provide a multitude of spaces for the revitalization of this valued area of town!
Earlier in the daylight (sun goes down between 5-5:30 each day of the year) in the plaza, I had seen this old granary & wondered about its history! And then surprisingly, we were ending our day in & on it! What a pleasure :).
