Craftsmanship of Pernambuco

Recife is in Pernambuco, one of Brazil's 26 states.  Ten years ago the Agency of Economic Development of Pernambuco created this craftsmanship "HANDICRAFT" center in one of Recife's old harbor warehouses on the downtown island.  It was the most amazing surprise because of the nondescript exterior.  You had to know to go!

Gorgeous & Unique Apparel

First for us (or last, depending on the end of the building you enter from, & in 80-some degree heat both outside and in) was a huge room of beautiful clothing and accessories.  But the east side of the room is open to the Atlantic breezes & a peninsula across an inlet which is against a barrier reef.

A Park for the Sculptures of Francisco Brennand

A great website on the history & life of this man is:   https://emag.archiexpo.com/leaving-a-legacy-the-pottery-of-oficina-francisco-brennand/

named:  Torre de Crista

Seen from the Handicraft Center is this Parque das Esculturas (Park of Sculptures)of/by Francisco Brennandin Recife - PE

which can be accessed by car or boat.  "He was a famous  Brazilian plastic artist, with ceramics, sculptures & paintings."

There is also a separate residence & studio (originally his father's ceramic tile factory in Recife) which, since his death in 2019 at age 92, has become a studio/ museum.

The following is a search menu to choose from:   Francisco Brennand studio museum<br> for more info.

Getting back into the Craftsmanship Center . . .

Turning the corner & through the hallway, it was an endless wonder of 1,000s & 1,000s of handmade art & craft works.

if you couldn't quite find that special something . . .

Circling the Island at dusk

Wires continue to run along the streets while new occupies the old.

The old runs side-by-side w/the new.

A typical street of a wall running along the sidewalk & covered w/a mural.  For some it's time to go home.

All over it's a continual mix of old meets new . . .

Visiting Brazil (Brasil)

Opening up the world to different cultures, but remembering all of us were created by God.

Information

This is the 3rd in a series of connected "Visiting Brazil" websites using Webnode's "free" website offer (which has limited space which photos, vs. text, use up very rapidly). Having had a limited knowledge of life in Brazil (only knowing of the Amazon, jungles, & the Jesus statue), I made this website series to share our March/ April 2023, month-long trip, for your enjoyment, enlightenment, and educational benefit to expand our South American cultural awareness.
